Music and working out go together like peanut butter and jelly. It's hard to imagine one without the other. But is it only for enjoyment?
Science would say otherwise.
Recent studies have suggested listening to music while working out can take your mind off the pain and strain experienced when "feeling the burn". Other studies found it goes one step further - playing music in time to one's pace had an even more profound affect, actually diminishing perceived effort while working out.
Similar studies imply working out with music makes participants less aware of their exertion and this distraction can benefit athletic performance by up to 15 percent.
And that's not all.
There has been upcoming evidence proposing songs with a perceived "high-groove factor" stimulate the part of the brain that inspires movement in the listener. In other words, your playlist can actually make you want to continue working out, even if you don't feel like it!
Most of us who already workout with headphones know these studies are not really proving anything we haven't already experienced, despite not being able to prove why it has been the case. We love working out with music as our motivation and stress reliever.
Science has been able to confirm what we already know, and that's a good thing =)
